The days when the words ‘all-inclusive’ can be interpreted as ‘drink as much as you want‘, may well be over in The Balearics.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has released information about the new drinking rules imposed in the Balearic Islands in Spain – Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca.

Holidaymakers can imbibe a maximum of six drinks a day at all-inclusive resorts while boozy activities such as pub crawls, party boat cruises and happy hours are banned.

Travel Agent Thomas Cook says on its website:

Please be advised that a decree has been issued by the Balearic Government on a new restriction for all inclusive meal option

There is a maximum of six alcoholic drinks per person per day that can be served and these drinks will be provided only during lunch and dinner (three each).

The new restrictions cover San Antonio and Magaluf while the six-drinks rule is in force at all-inclusive resorts.

Fines could also be issued for attending ‘irregular commercially promoted parties in villas and private homes,’ the FCO said.

The Balearics tourism minister,  Iago Negueruela, said

We want to put a stop to bad behaviour. From April to May this year we will increase the police presence in these areas and the number of inspectors. We will have zero tolerance for tourism excesses. We will have zero tolerance for tourism excesses.

The new law bans off-licence alcohol sales from 9.30pm to 8am and anyone breaking this law risks being issued with a fine of up to €60,000.

Travel association Abta has said it”strongly supports” the new rules and is backing the Balearic government on its plans.

A spokesman said:

Abta will continue to engage with the Balearic Islands Government, Abta Members and other parties, to encourage clear communication and exchange of information, in order to ensure holidaymakers travelling to hotels in the designated areas enjoy a positive customer experience.
